In considering Jeffrey Stern’s remarkable account of his work with Drum, I address the implications of radical departures from the analytic frame. The stories within the story. The multiple meanings, conscious and unconscious, for each member of the dyad as decisions get made and enacted that seem to enliven and facilitate. There is an emphasis on the importance of understanding how we get to where we go as we continually navigate our way between safety and risk staying mindful of the multiple meanings emergent for both analyst and analysand even as the frame bends in unprecedented ways.
