This paper examines Heinz Kohut’s use of physical touch with a patient he described as deeply depressed and suicidal. Kohut presented this case vignette as the last paragraph of his final public address, which was primarily focused on his ideas around empathy. Yet in presenting his two-step process of empathic understanding followed by a move to interpretation, he chose to describe a case in which physical connection was offered, and accepted by the patient, over interpretation. The author provides a detailed examination of Kohut’s vignette through the integration of psychoanalysis and body analysis. When examined from within a theory of body analysis, Kohut’s case advances the idea of including touch with trauma patients and using it as part of an overall reassessment of physical engagement in treatment.
