The author describes growing up with guns in her Midwest community in the 1950s and 60s, where rifles, shotguns and hunting dogs were common sights. While she was comfortable shooting skeet and tin cans for target practice as an adolescent, she became wary of guns as an adult when she moved to New York. As mass shootings on college campuses, post offices and schools occurred with greater frequency, her discomfort with firearms hardened into aversion and later, fear, as weapons and threats of violence invaded the consulting room.
