Richard asked Mrs K. to take the fleet out of his overcoat pocket because he was watching out for children on the road and did not wish to miss anything. Some children passed on their way to school, and the red-haired girl was running ahead of the others. Richard said, ‘There she is, my enemy, running for her life,’ and stated that the others were pursuing her. If he could, he would also chase her.
Mrs K. interpreted that he felt that the girl was threatened by him who wished to kill her, and that he had attributed to the other children his wish to chase and kill her. (This was the girl who had asked him whether he was Italian: see Tenth Session.) Mrs K. interpreted that he also feared and hated this girl because she stood for himself who was afraid of foreigners and spies; in the previous session these had turned out to be poisoners as well.
Richard agreed that he was frightened of spies and foreigners, but stoutly affirmed that he was not frightened of Mrs K. At that moment he made sure that the door was properly shut.
