Richard was friendly and seemed quite happy. He told Mrs K. that he had had a good bus journey by himself. He referred angrily, however, to other occasions when the bus had been crowded and the conductress had said, ‘Half fares stand up,’ and Richard had had to give up his seat.
Mrs K. interpreted that since Richard wished to compete with Daddy for Mummy, he was very angry at being considered to be only half a man. She asked whether there had been any boys in the bus.
Richard said yes, there were, but they did not pay any attention to him, nor did he to them.… He said that his father was doing quite well.
