Richard looked very depressed and was a few minutes late, which was somewhat unusual. It was obvious that he was unhappy and that something was the matter with him; but when asked by Mrs K. whether this was so, he did not reply. He sat down and said that he had not brought the fleet. Suddenly he discovered that Mrs K. had in her shopping basket a parcel to be posted.1 Richard at once got hold of it, looked at the address, and saw that it was to go to Mrs K.'s grandson. Holding it to his nose, he said that it seemed to contain fruit, it smelt like oranges, was this true? Mrs K. agreed and Richard wanted to know where she had got the oranges from.
Mrs K. replied that on the previous day the grocer had distributed two oranges to each of his customers.
