Dear Father Freud,
The mountain has been scaled-that is to say, the book is there. On Tuesday it should come out-and since Tuesday is counted as the Jews' lucky day because in the story of the Creation the report inadvertently occurs twice ‘and He saw that it was good’, I am going to interpret that as a good omen. The book will give offence to Jews and non-Jews alike, since it condemns nationalism and political murder even among Jews, and as I am ridiculously sensitive to public criticism, though I attach no importance to it, I have already got an uneasy feeling-arising from a state of exhaustion after my work.
29 Nov. This letter was interrupted by the news that the book was not to appear on Tuesday and that it contained a number of misprints which had still to be corrected-and with this announcement began a period of irritation for me, too petty to bother you with but unpleasant enough…. But now it really is out; you have it in your hands and you will feel how much it owes to you.
