Vienna XIX, Strassergasse 41
11. v. 34
Dear Meister Arnold,
No greeting on my 78th birthday has preoccupied me more closely than yours. I would like best to go on thinking about my reply for another week, but what would you be thinking of me by that time? So I shall begin today and continue in the next few days.
I do not-as yet-know the book by Podach that has so fired you. I shall read it through if you would like me to. I am enclosing the crazy announcement of a book by a probably imperfectly cured psychotic, who claims to have penetrated the mystery of Friedrich Nietzsche. You can never tell what such a fool may not have puzzled out for himself. Our friend Lou is over 70 years old and as far as I can judge from this distance, not in the best of health. She never writes about herself in her letters and she never complains. She must be one of the few people alive who know anything intimate about him. And she is not given to telling it. Certainly she would only do so by word of mouth. She never wanted to tell me about him. For your purposes she would of course be invaluable. All these are just superficial comments.
