Carmel, 21. 3. 37
Dear Father Freud,
Why should we not meet this year since it is certain that we shall all be coming to Europe this summer, unless some terrible accidents intervene. There is just one difficulty-we shall have to come by the cheapest route and that will be to Marseilles, between £6-£9 return, fare to Paris inclusive. But I have already started to make enquiries in Prague about delivering a lecture there; perhaps I will give two there and one in Brünn. Then I shall be quite near Vienna and my visa is valid till well into October. So it may be late in the year, but I shall certainly visit you and your family. But it would be kind if you could prolong your stay on earth somewhat. You have granted us 81 1/2 years, but this will not benefit us if we finally turn our backs on Palestine. And that we shall do next spring. It is financially impossible to carry on here. I am too far away from all chance of earning money in between writing my two long novels. We need more than I can in normal circumstances earn these days, despite stringent economics and without running a car or having many servants in the house. And how much the Russians will be able to alter this position remains to be seen. They certainly promise to pay. But in the first place not one of my novels has appeared as yet in Russia and secondly I am sceptical about the chameleonlike character of their system of publishing.
