Zurich
10 August 37
Dear Father Freud,
To explain our silence: while we were having a meal in the dining-car, Dita's trunk, together with all our things, was pinched from the train-whether by mistake or on purpose, it was gone. We stayed three days in Obernberg on the Brenner to give Innsbruck time to make enquiries. My
frightful catarrh got so much better in the marvellous air there, that I could talk in an undertone without my throat getting sore. Meanwhile the trunk has not yet turned up; we are making further enquiries. We went on to Lucerne, somewhat rested, installed Adam in the Bergsonne, the children's hostel on the Rigi, bathed in the lake and yesterday came on to Zurich to buy some new things for Dita and to arrange our visas and tickets for the journey home. We are very tired and somewhat depressed. The time we spent in Vienna with you in the warmth of your whole household will come into its own full radiance again once we have come to rest somewhere and can think over the whole period and all that happened. We had no idea we were so in need of rest; it is frightfully hot everywhere, it's true.
I am writing by lamplight when I should not really do this. I am still very hoarse and have so far not got into touch with Basel where post is awaiting me.
With warm greetings and many thanks from us all to you all
Yours
Zweig
I will send you our address later.
