Dear Meister Arnold,
Your letter has reminded me that you will soon be leaving the Unholy Land and its foothills, and so I must overcome my present disinclination and send you our news in writing. Unfortunately it is about my own state of health which threatens to become interesting. Since the operation in September I have been sufferingfrom painin the jaw, and this has increased slowly but steadily, so that without hot-water bottles and large doses of aspirin I would not get through my daily tasks or my nights. On an earlier occasion a fairly large sequestrum of bone was discharged; it was expected that this process would be repeated and settle the affair, but so far this has not happened. They are uncertain as to what is taking place and do not know whether the delay is basically innocuous or whether it is a further step in the mysterious process we have been combatting for sixteen years.
The very reliable doctor we have chosen here, Dr. Trotter, F.R.S., is against a further operation and recommends radium treatment, should any treatment prove necessary, but he cannot yet decide and confines himself to observation.
