I wish to express my thanks to Mrs. Joyce Coles for a great deal of work carefully done in the preparation of this book, including the Index, for which she is largely responsible.
Masud Khan has given generously of his time, advice and constructive criticism, so that I feel that but for him this book would not have appeared.
The publishers have been most co-operative in the matter of reproduction of drawings which, as they were not drawn for show, have often given rise to severe difficulties in regard to presentation. The trouble here is that I myself prefer the original state of children's drawings to the better pictures that can be obtained by skilful touching up.
Some of the cases in this book have been presented before as lectures or as published papers, and I am most grateful for permission to include them. Details of previous publication are as follows:
Case III: Voices (Spring 1968), a journal published by the American Academy of Psychotherapists; also Handbook of the Psychotherapy of Children, edited by Dr. G. Bierman (Ernst Reinhardt, Munich, 1969). Case IV: International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, Volume 46. Case VI: St Mary's Hospital Gazette, Jan./Feb. 1962, under the title ‘A Child Psychiatry Interview’. Case VII: A Crianca Portuguesa, Ano. XXI, 1962–63 (Lisbon). Case IX: Foundations of Child Psychiatry, edited by Emanuel Miller (Pergamon Press, 1968). Case XII: The World Biennial of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (Basic Books, 1970). Case XIII: Crime, Law and Corrections, edited by Ralph Slovenko (Charles C. Thomas, 1966), under the title ‘A Psychoanalytic View of the Antisocial Tendency’. Case XIV: British Journal of Medical Psychology (1963), Volume 36, Number 1, under the title ‘Regression as Therapy’. Case XV: Modern Perspectives in Child Psychiatry, edited by John G. Howells (Oliver & Boyd, 1965). Case XVII: published in shortened version as ‘Becoming Deprived as a Fact: A Psychotherapeutic Consultation’, Journal of Child Psychotherapy (December 1966),
