Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
Dear Frau Andreas
How irksome it must have been for you to put down on paper these difficult matters, which it is so much easier to talk about! If I understand you aright, you would like a verbal discussion. I would have made a definite suggestion for this long ago, had I not in addition to my usual preoccupations been concerned recently with the establishment of the new psycho-analytic journal.10
I do not know whether your daily programme would permit you to fit in a discussion after 10 P.M.; my free time does not begin till then. If you can decide to honour me with a visit at so late an hour, I will gladly undertake to see you safely home. We can then arrange on Wednesday evening which day it shall be.11
I missed you in the lecture yesterday and I am glad to hear that your visit to the camp of masculine protest played no part in your absence. I have adopted the bad habit of always directing my lecture to a definite member of the audience, and yesterday I fixed my gaze as if spellbound at the place which had been kept for you.
Sincerely yours,
Freud
In January Imago had begun to appear; towards the end of the year Freud founded the Internationale Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse, which was edited by Ferenczi, Rank and Jones. It took the place of the Zentralblatt für Psychoanalyse, which had recently come under the sole editorship of Wilhelm Stekel.
According to Lou A.-S.'s Journal her first visit to Freud took place on 3 December: ‘Sunday, invited to Freud's from 3 P.M. on: very enjoyable’. Further visits followed on Sunday, 2 February 1913: ‘Invited to Freud's, very friendly and enjoyable’. Sunday, 9 February: ‘Many hours with Freud, left with pink tulips and pale lilac’. Thursday, 13 February: ‘Supper at Freud's. He talked beforehand about Tausk. Stayed a long time in Freud's study, he accompanied me home late in the night; we talk personally and understand each other well.’
