Göttingen, 7.1.1914
Dear Professor
I reciprocate your New Year greetings most warmly and I send you and your family all my good wishes. For me a year has ended, of which all that has been best in it is so closely connected with you that I shall never be able to look back upon it without saying ‘Thank you’ from my heart.
As enclosure there comes to you a young lady22 about whom I said in my letter from Berlin in November that my connection with her was very remote. But since you wish it, I am sending her—even if with mixed feelings. But apart from this she comes with many warm wishes from
Your
Lou Andreas
Lou A.-S. herself, in the form of a photograph, which, ‘over a dozen years old’, may have been taken in Berlin, before the move to Göttingen in 1903. Perhaps it was the same photo of which Rilke wrote on 18 January 1904: ‘The photo is very like what you are at certain moments—but it is not you altogether, I should say that you might look like that when you were about to be unhappy. I imagine that you have changed since then.’ This is reproduced on the jacket of this volume.
