Dear Frau Andreas
You know how to cheer and encourage. I would not have believed, least of all in my present isolation, that psycho-analysis could mean so much to someone else or that anyone would be able to read so much in my words. Naturally, I believe it of you. And at the same time you have a subtle way of indicating where gaps become visible and where further argument is needed. But, as you know, I always make do with the isolated and the incomplete.
Your paper ‘Anal and Sexual’ is eagerly awaited; I am not sure whether it will appear in the Journal or in Imago. Both depend for their existence on the favour of a worthy but capricious publisher. I have just had the idea of gaining more control over him by entrusting him with the publication of my Introductory Lectures,57 which I am giving again this year. Last time you were among my audience and I could tell from your expression whether the lecture was going all right.
The offprint you asked for went off to you today. He happened to be away from the dug-out where the whole crew in charge of his gun had sought shelter during the battle on the Karst plateau and he was thus the only one to escape the fate of being buried alive by a direct hit. Do you think we can count on the
