Dear Frau Andreas
Your manuscript has arrived and is now in the hands of the editors, who send you their thanks. In my opinion it is the best thing you have given me to date. Both your incredible subtlety of understanding and your impressive gift of making a synthesis out of the material you have sifted in your investigation find admirable expression in this work. Many thanks too from me personally for your not having forgotten our problems in these all-demanding times.
The news from the front is good. My son has been invited to design the memorial for his troop; this will no doubt have been his first job as an architect.
In the last number of the Neue Deutsche Rundschau (or Revue?) there is an essay by Schleich59 with comments on psycho-analysis which bear witness to an equal quantity of interest and of ignorance and which are based on confused ideas.
With sincere greetings,
Yours,
Freud
Carl Ludwig Schleich, 1859-1922, Berlin surgeon famous for his use of local anaesthesia. The essay in question, entitled ‘Zucht’ (Discipline), was published in the Neue Rundschau for October 1915, and dealt with Ignatius Loyola, ending with a eulogy of the discipline of the German army.
