Göttingen, 11 May 1916
Dear Professor,
Thank you for your letter. But I am sorry that I learnt of your and our celebration so late in the day and by chance, so that I could only write in telegram style. You say that it would have been but a melancholy event at any time—but when each year that passes is rich and momentous, and where one would not miss a single product of your mind, there can be no melancholy, and at the end of another ten years there will be yet another joyous celebration.
I would like to have sent you what I produced in the years 1914/15 in this context: a little book about what is most significant for me in your psycho-analysis, in which I have tried to make it palatable to wider circles. If times were different, it might perhaps already be in print, but since this is not the case your most recent writings shall be woven into it, at least in the form of postscripts and insertions. You would easily be able to see from it how delighted I have been at much in your recent essays, including some points where I was not absolutely sure whether we thought alike.
