Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
Dear Frau Andreas
Two days ago I sent you the first instalment of my Lectures—crude stuff meant for the masses, and, as you know, entrusted with the role of absolving me once and for all from giving any more elementary lectures. Today, just before we set off for Bad Gastein, I want to thank you for your last letter, with whose contents I am by no means wholly in agreement, and for the enclosed menu, which of course whets the appetite without satisfying it. I was very amused to read in your letter that you so frankly embrace the opinions of the six big brothers, who are all so good and gentle with their only little sister. I object to the calm announcement in your letter that your book is to be delayed, while you lament the unavoidable delay of mine. I see things the other way round: I am not at all curious about my book, but very much so about yours.
The number of Imago containing your essay is making good progress; we had such misfortunes with the first number of the 1916 Journal that it will not now appear till August. There has been trouble in all the works; the printer cast a spell on one manuscript, declared that he had never received the corrected proofs, etc., without our being able to feel that we could pitch into him, as we might have done. Deuticke has suspended all and every activity; the printing of the five sheets of my lectures took from 3 January to 10 July.
It is only in America that anything is still going on in the world. In the last number of the Psycho-Analytic Review I found an excellent criticism of Adler by Putnam, and I received a book by a Harvard psychologist, Holt, entitled The Freudian Wish.72
Don't be angry at being called an ‘understander’. I know well that you are more than that, but deep understanding—understanding more than is there—is the basis of everything.
Warmest greetings. Letters will be forwarded from Vienna, or you can write Poste Restante, Bad Gastein (3-4 weeks).
Yours sincerely,
Freud
