Dearest Lou
I hear with regret from Anna that you are unwell and must take a rest. Naturally, I expect that you will have recovered before you set off for Berlin; but there is something else which I wanted to write to you about.
For I have learnt from the same limpid source what privations you are wont to impose upon yourself. That must not be. And so I had decided to take with me to Berlin a small sum in hard currency in order to make things easier for you until we had found one or more proper patients for you. My foreign patients have obliged me to earn money even in the holidays, and I would like you to have shared in this summer practice. Anna was, it is true, of the opinion that you would not accept it, but she doesn't realize how sensible you are, and believes you capable of everything possible and impossible, e.g., of living on air and cocoa. In any case resistance would have been of no avail.
But now that you are actually ill, it is my view that you need a stimulus here and now to look after yourself, and so I am transferring 20,000 marks to your account, which will I hope reach you soon. Please give us the satisfaction of hearing that you have recovered, and bring the indomitable and serenely cheerful Lou to the Hotel Eitingon.
Au revoir till then!
Cordially yours,
Freud
