Dearest Lady
So I am in Rome160 again, and I note that it will do me good. I realize here for the first time what good company my little daughter is.
When I was in Lavarone I was able by chance to make an arrangement with Eitingon, according to which I pay a certain sum to him in Vienna at the beginning of each of the next six months, in return for which he will despatch a small cheque to Göttingen. I hope that your old man is mending.
Cordially yours,
Freud
Freud had visited Rome on many occasions. This time his daughter Anna went with him. ‘Papa was much better than in Lavarone and he could really enjoy everything. Just in the last two days his mouth has been giving him trouble again. He has introduced me to everything so well, and made me feel at home among all the beauties, antiquities and other sights that now after the second week I feel that I quite belong, and as if I had been with him on all the other numerous occasions that he has been here.’ Letter to Lou A.-S. They returned home on 21 September.
