[Berlin, soon after 15 February 1925]
Dear Professor,
Very many thanks for the offprint.182 I had already begun to read it in the book itself and am delighted now to possess it, both on account of the content and the inscription. It is like having a conversation with you, and how many memories it evokes! But when, I often ask myself, shall we have this conversation in person?
In any case I would have written to you in the next few days to tell you about our patient. We have just succeeded in gradually persuading her to do without the nurse, first by night, and then by day. This was not accomplished without violent resistance. But at any rate it was accomplished. We have now evolved the following plan: equally gradually we shall replace the medical attendant who comes with her by ‘someone else’; first by letting all three come together, then by letting the attendant go back home at earlier and earlier stages of their journey, be it by tram or bus or on foot. These are in the first place purely practical measures, in order to enable her to manage the country walk to our house in Gödttingen. They are being achieved with the help of a positive transference: hence they have no great significance and the situation is about as stable as a weathercock. And yet they contribute to the analysis as such, in so far as Frau E. brings with her from such exercises (active therapy!)183
