22.x.1930,
Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
My dear Lou*
My reply should have come more quickly, but it was delayed for some days in which I was ill and confined to bed, and I am still dependent on Anna's help.
I was very glad to hear that in the first instance nothing will change in your outer circumstances, that you are staying on in Göttingen and in your own house. Furthermore I say to myself
that it would be useless to wait for any clearer indication on your part, and so this is just to let you know that I have today instructed my son Ernst to transfer to you 1000 marks out of the money from the Goethe Prize212 which is deposited with him. In this way I can reduce by a little the injustice which was committed when they awarded the prize to me.
When you write, do not forget to add a word about the state of your health.
With cordial greetings,
Yours,
Freud
At the beginning of August Freud heard from the writer Alphons Paquet that he had been awarded the Goethe Prize of 10,000 marks. Ernest Jones comments that this sum would just cover the expenses Freud had incurred through his protracted stay in Berlin. Anna Freud read her father's address of thanks for the award of the prize in the Goethehaus in Frankfurt am Main on 28 August 1930.
