Dear Professor Freud,
Would you please ask Anna to be so good as to send me a card straightaway to let me know if you are really up and at work again? I can scarcely believe it! Is it not very incautious, if it was really pneumonia? I shall remain very worried if I do not hear anything.
The outcome of your instructions to your son Ernst is doubtless already under way: but I regard it as a mere change of address, and on this understanding I shall keep it in trust as a token of your inestimable kindness. For in actual fact I am not in financial difficulties and can manage quite well with my widow's pension, as I live very quietly. To meet debts quite a favourable mortgage was taken out on the house by my husband; and for the rest my anxiety to find wealthy patients is occasioned by my perennial effort to work for my impoverished nephews and nieces in Russia—but my greatest desire is to work, in the professional sense of the word.
Anna will be sure to send me a word about you, won't she? My health is not at all bad. Indeed I have put on several pounds in weight, from 90 odd to 114!!
Dear, dear Professor Freud,* may life go well and ever better with you!
Your grateful
Lou
