[Hochrotherd] 8.5.1932
My dear Lou
Birthdays are one of those things which can adequately be described only by the English word ‘nuisance’. Their sole excuse is that they can only occur once a year and that not for long. However, in consequence of the endless complications of our existence it comes about that they too have their purpose, e.g., that they produce letters which give one pleasure and which one might otherwise not have received. I am replying to you from a very charming little study in Hochrotherd.218 I do not know whether Anna has told you where and what that is. If not, then you will enquire, i.e., write again.
I am very pleased to hear that you are working at your memoirs. It has often annoyed me to find your relationship to Nietzsche mentioned in a way which was obviously hostile to you and which could not possibly correspond with the facts. You have put up with everything and have been far too decent; I hope that now at last you will defend yourself, even though in the most dignified way.
In reply to your query about the Verlag I am passing on to you a circular219 which I sent out recently, if you still wish to have anything to do with it!
With warmest greetings,
Yours,
Freud
On 22 October 1930 Anna Freud had written to Lou A.-S.: ‘Dorothy [Burlingham] and I have bought a little cottage with three acres of land. It is in Hochrotherd near Breitenfurt, in the neighbourhood of Mauer, but high up. It is all still very shabby, but we are fixing it up.’
Ernest Jones writes (Vol. III, 179): ‘In April Freud wrote out a full statement, several pages long, describing the situation of the Verlag, and making an appeal for help from the International Psycho-Analytical association. He sent copies to the Presidents of the various Societies, and we made further copies of the translation and distributed them among all the members.’
