Dear Professor Freud,†
I am writing your new address out of sheer bliss, for now my anxieties are more than dissipated. You wrote: it is the most charming
house and the most beautiful garden in which you have ever spent your summer holiday. If only you could stay there, not only for the short summer period, but for the winter too. Is this completely out of the question? Could not these ‘honest and friendly patricians’, as you call them, be persuaded to agree to this?
I wish to lose no time in adding one further point to this short letter of greeting and thanks, since you put the question to me at the end of your letter: it concerns the Nietzsche project. It is absolutely out of the question that I should participate in this in any way. I cannot consider such a thing and the mere thought of it fills me with dismay. Please tell this to your correspondent in the strongest and most final terms—moreover, how right you are to dissuade him altogether from his Nietzsche plan!
With my warmest greetings to you all,
Yours,
Lou
