[Vienna] May 1936
[Printed] Cordial thanks for your congratulations on my eightieth birthday.
Dearest Lou!
What can I write to you? I have spent the last two weeks in trying to deal with a mass of mostly superfluous letters. I can only say—what I feel each time I get a letter from you—that I know too little about you, and that what I should like best to hear would be that a minor operation would very soon give you back the sight of your beautiful wise eyes. My sister-in-law Minna has at last got over the period of severe pain and can rejoice in a complete recovery. I too cannot travel any more. In this way one is granted a meagre kind of life on sufferance! No matter.
