I have endeavoured to share some of my observations during the termination of my analytic practice due to a geographical move. In so doing I have attempted to recreate the experiences both my patients and I participated in within the analytic situation. This included: (1) A review of the literature. (2) A revisitation to termination experiences of my own past. (3) A review of my conceptualization of an optimally terminated analysis. (4) The special considerations involved in a forced termination which is determined by the analyst due to a geographical relocation. (5) The similarities between (3) and (4) and bringing a developmental phase to suitable closure in normal growth and development. (6) The presentation of two clinical examples which illustrate the impact of the reality of the forced termination on the analytic process and the diagnostic and technical problems encountered.
