By documenting the various narcissism themes which pervaded Rank's psychological writings, we have attempted to demonstrate that in his theories of personality, neurosis and therapy he essentially presents us with theories of the dynamics, pathology and treatment of narcissism. Furthermore, through a study of Rank's own life history, we have attempted to locate the sources of his precocious insights into and one-sided emphasis upon the narcissistic sector within his own personality structure and subjective experiences. Thus we present this ego-psychological analysis of the work and life of Otto Rank as a concrete illustration of some general propositions concerning the subjectivity of personality theories.
