This paper reviews the developmental arrest which is found to underlie the aetiology of borderline psychopathology, specifically, failure of separation-individuation, including the effects of the latter upon psychosexual development and its particular distortion of object relationships. A diagnostic nosology of borderline disorders is proposed. Finally, brief excerpts from an adult case in analytical treatment are presented to illustrate points of theory.
