Two cases have been presented in which the umbilicus was the site of significant distortions. These distortions were seen as compromise-formations related to conflicts over bisexuality and the drive to become both sexes (Kubie, 1974) as well as over symbiosis and individuation. The case material presented was consistent with recent publications dealing with the umbilicus as the site of psychic distortions. Both Heilbrunn and Waltzer have observed that the umbilicus has been neglected in the psychoanalytic literature. It is hoped that this paper provides an additional contribution and stimulates further research. It is interesting that this topic has not been written about previously and that within two years several cases have come to the fore. It seems unlikely that distortions about the umbilicus have not arisen before in psychoanalytic treatment. Have we just assumed that such material represents a simple displacement upward from the genitals and dismissed it at that and that presently we are probing deeper? Perhaps further contributions will also aid in an understanding of why this topic now emerges as a subject in itself.
