In this psychoanalytic-biographical study of the terminal and preterminal periods in the life of the composer Gustav Mahler, his final illness and death are related to psychological factors, in particular to mental state. The relevant data, in addition to the usual biographical material, include the use of the musical record itself. The latter is treated as associative material in both its verbal and formal aspects.
