Clinical material from a silent patient and observations of normal children are presented to elucidate the mutual interdependence between the development of speech and problems of separation-individuation. It is suggested that the development of speech increasingly takes the child out of the symbiotic tie to the mother, and that problems with separation-individuation can interfere with speech development.
