In this paper I have tried to being some very brief clinical material from psychoanalytic work with perverse patients to support the thesis that such patients show a characteristic and complicated ambiguity of symbolic function, which becomes prominent in direct proportion to the impinging of their basic dependency needs within the transference. This thesis was deduced from Dr Segal's work on the nature and formation of unconscious symbols which I have taken as axiomatic. I have found the clinical perspective based on it helpful in making contact with such patients and understanding the nature of analytic impasses and counter transference collusions within the perverse transference.
