While there is no evidence that Freud ever had in analysis a leading political figure, he did analyse the sister of one and make her the basis of an important case history. Dora's brother, Otto Bauer, was an influential Austro-Marxist theoretician and leader in the Austrian Socialist Party from 1918 to 1934. Freud's Dora case and other information illuminate the psychodynamics of Otto Bauer's life and career, especially his tendency to vacillate at crucial moments and hesitate to take action when
action clearly was called for. A re-examination of the case and research on Bauer suggests that he, too, 'suffered from reminiscences'.
