It would appear from the examination of the case that the creative modality of poetry was useful for this patient in the development of higher level object relations as well as for ego integration in general. The creativity can be viewed as a sublimation which had a synthesizing influence for her and which was strengthened in and of itself through its communicative aspects. A postscript might be briefly mentioned. On a nine month follow-up contact the patient reported continued creative activity as well as increased healthy functioning in general. She had attempted to write a poem to the therapist recently but had realized a defensive aspect in the wish. Instead she was able to communicate verbally the strong affects she had previously only conveyed in her writing.
