Abstract

The patient was a completely withdrawn, 3-year-old girl, with a stereotyped, intensely destructive behaviour pattern; she reeled about

and bit into pieces whatever came her way. Nothing in her behaviour or in her way of being, gave evidence of an inner reality. The intense, impulse-like quality of her behaviour might suggest an equally intense but blocked craving for an object.
