In this paper a description is given of an examination scheme for the psychotic patient. The concepts which form the basis of the scheme enable the psychoanalytic psychiatrist to evaluate the clinical manifestations in both metapsychological and developmental terms. This becomes increasingly important where the contact between patient and psychoanalyst develops into a therapeutic relationship.
