In this paper, it is argued that Freudian theory is libertarian rather than deterministic. The claim rests on a clarification of the meaning of several relevant terms and a textual analysis of how Freud uses the term 'psychic determinism'. This procedure, in addition to establishing the paper's thesis, also yields a noteworthy hypothesis: Freud fails to distinguish between causal explanation and mere intelligibility. This conceptual confusion and its ramifications bear further study, and are the subject of a work in progress.
