Preceding the International Psychoanalytic Congress at Helsinki in 1981, the 9th Pre-Congress on Training was held under the Chairmanship of Bo Larsson of Sweden and with Shelley Orgel of the U.S.A. as Co-chairman and Anne-Marie Sandler of the U.K. as Secretary. The topic of the Pre-Congress was 'The Selection and Function of the Training Analyst'. Three pre-circulated papers were presented covering the basic facts and viewpoints of Institutes and Training Centres of the International Psychoanalytical Association, based on their answers to a questionnaire. Three main areas were covered by the three papers. Anne-Marie Sandler presented the paper on Europe, Leão Cabernite of Brazil the paper on Latin America and Shelley Orgel the paper on North America. Bo Larsson started the work of the Pre-Congress with a paper summarizing the three main papers and a paper on the Pre-Congress theme by Edward Weinshel wound up the work. Bo Larsson's informative diagrams and the four other papers are now published in view of the important and interesting views and statistics which they contain.
