DEAR SIR,
Your readers who have been stimulated by the Devereux (1980) communication on Freud and the principle of complementarity, and the letter in response by Rothenberg (1982), will be interested in an earlier paper published on this subject
by Edelheit (1976), a reference omitted by both Devereux and Rothenberg.
In this wide-ranging and thoughtful study, Edelheit discusses the historical, epistemologic, and theoretical significance of this principle to psychoanalysis specifically, and psychology in general, through an investigation of Hughlings Jackson's comparable formulations and their place in Freud's ultimate conceptualizations.
Sincerely
