DEAR SIR,
In the IPA Newsletter Number 2 from April 1982 the death of Dr Theodor Dosuzkov, a Direct Member from Prague, Czechoslovakia, on the 19th January 1982, was mentioned. I should like to emphasize the great merits of the late Dr Dosuzkov in promoting and supporting the development of psychoanalysis in Czechoslovakia in the last fifty years or so.
Born in Baku in Russian in 1899, he came to Prague in the twenties, where he studied medicine and became a neurologist and psychiatrist. Soon he developed an interest in psychoanalysis and entered the Prague Group. As a pupil of A. Reich and O. Fenichel he finished his training in 1934, became a practising analyst and an active member of the group, then guided by Fenichel. He survived (as the only one fully-trained analyst) the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. During the war he held lectures in his consulting room for interested students. After the war, 1946, he founded the Society for the Study of Psycho-Analysis in Prague. Till 1948 he stood in the centre of vivid official psychoanalytical activities in Czechoslovakia. Dr Dosuzkov continued with his work until the last few months of his life. He treated patients, trained interested students and lectured to them. He took part in most International Congresses of the IPA. His scientific interests have been published in more than 170 publications, papers, books published in many languages and presented to congresses. His description of 'Scoptophobia, the fourth psychoneuroses' became internationally known.
His death is a great loss not only to psychoanalysis in Czechoslovakia, where he leaves a gap that cannot be filled. He was engaged in the psychoanalytical movement, the support of which was his highest aim in life.
Sincerely yours, DR R. FISCHER
