Almost alone amongst Jung's central concepts, his theory of archetypes has not been overtly paralleled by developments in psychoanalysis. A critical summary of Jung's theory was given, together with a discussion of a selection of critiques from inside and outside analytical psychology. Then the work of post-Jungian analytical psychologists was introduced and discussed. Parallels from disciplines other than psychoanalysis, and then from psychoanalysis
were suggested. The author proposed some modifications to archetypal theory to facilitate further rapprochement.
