The author's thesis is that the concept of the False Self, as outlined by Winnicott (1965) is a useful one clinically and that existential contributions to the topic, such as Kierkegaard's are complementary to psychoanalytic ones such as those of Kohut. This paper offers an integration of psychoanalytic and existential approaches to the concept of the False Self and outlines a clinical approach to the treatment of False Self individuals.
