I have tried to demonstrate the interplay between internal and external world phenomena in character development by reference to the work of two women. In George Eliot's literary work the theme is brought to life. She affirms the existence of a living and uncharted internal world. Melanie Klein in her psychoanalytical work nearly a century later has helped us to understand it.
