DEAR SIR,
Hanna Segal in her Introduction to the Work of Melanie Klein draws our attention to Klein's equation of envy with the death instinct:—
'… (envy) may be considered to be the earliest direct externalisation of the death instinct' (p. 40 2nd edition).
In his Essayes or Counsels Civill and Morall, Francis Bacon, born 1561, when ending his Essay 'Of Death' suggests that the greatest consolation of death is that it, 'extinguisheth envy.'
Yours sincerely,
