In his only recently published notebooks, Coleridge in 1805 refers to 'psycho-analytical understanding' as that which is needed to recover the presence of Greek myth hidden with Renaissance epic verse, this for the sake of realizing a purified Christian Faith. In 1896 Freud introduced 'psychoanalysis' to uncover latent '"endopsychic" myths' in the healing of mental disorder. The independent neologisms of Coleridge and Freud may be advantageously viewed within the post-Enlightenment crisis of belief, and efforts to recover faith through self-understanding.
