Many reasons have been put forward to say that psychoanalysis is not applicable to the Chinese: the Chinese have a particular concept of psychiatric illness; a lot is still unknown about Chinese psychosexual development; the Chinese do not disclose their personal problems easily and they are used to authoritative and directive approaches. These reasons are however not necessarily valid. Based on his understanding of psychoanalysis and Chinese culture, his experience of trying psychoanalytic psychotherapy on the Chinese, and on experimental data, the author discusses how it is possible to overcome each of the above difficulties theoretically and in practice, and suggests that more of the psychoanalytic type of psychotherapy should be tried on Chinese patients.
