In Japan Dr Taceo Doi, a training analyst of considerable standing, has discovered that Japanese contains a unique word, 'amae', with no equivalent in any other language even in the East. It consists of at least three connected meanings. It applies to the psychology of babyhood, to adults, social psychology generally, and the psychology of the Japanese in particular. Though there are other significant terms in Japanese and contributions to psychoanalysis, this would seem to be the most important, or at least one of the two most important. The author also goes into its psychopathology.
