The author notes that there are serious differences between the German original of Freud and the Strachey translation. It is not that the English version is incorrect, but that it is necessarily an interpretation of the text. Any retranslation will produce a new interpretation which will have similar difficulties in being accepted by groups of analysts. The author suggests as a possible solution the use of a threefold page, containing the original German, the chosen translation and a commentary on the other possible readings.
