This paper examines the literature about the psychoanalytic theories and treatment of stuttering. The analytic treatment of a 5-year-old boy who stuttered is described in detail. From this perspective it appears that stuttering in an overdetermined way expresses conflicts at all psychosexual levels with particular constellations of emphasis depending on the vicissitudes of each individual's constitution, temperament, and life experiences. This is related to the way in which stuttering both represents and expresses a vulnerability in the development of the early ego's mastery of affects, especially anger, sadness, anxiety and excitement. As described, child analysis offers an effective way to resolve the conflicts and ego limitations of children who stutter allowing these children to return to the path of progressive development.
